What do we do?

The aim of the Group is to reach out to those from Black and Minority Ethnic backgrounds in North Somerset to ensure they are receiving appropriate services, link people up with one another and help groups evolve; to engage with existing groups and associations; to set up a BME forum which can give the minority ethnic community a voice, be a focal point for the BME voluntary sector and promote joint working between different minority ethnic groups to increase their engagement with public agencies and promote good race relations.  

The work of the BME covers three broad categories:
  • Engagement:  Engage with North Somerset BME communities and with the decision makers to contribute to policy development and decision making, so as to increase the awareness of the needs of the BME communities.
  • Capacity Building: Build and develop local organisational capacity so that they can deliver quality services to the community.
  • Equality and Cohesion: Promote cohesion and working to take equality forward in the North Somerset.
